Research Area:

A neuroscience researcher for 30+ years, I have been a lead researcher for the NIDILRR TBI Model Systems program since 1992 and involved with military and Veterans polytrauma (TBI, mental health disorders, pain) research since 2000, with funding from NIH, DoD, and VA-ORD. I have been the VA champion and co-led the development and publication of the joint DoD/VA Clinical Practice Guidelines for The Management of Concussion/Mild TBI in 2009. 2016 and 2021. Since 2013, I have been the PI of a nationwide team of 75+ researchers at 16 VAMCs, 9 MTFs and 30 Universities to study the long terms effects of combat-exposures and military service among active-duty service members and veterans through the Long-term Impact of Military-relevant Brain Injury Consortium-Chronic Effects of Neurotrauma Consortium (LIMBIC-CENC). LIMBIC's has been successful in improving the standardized assessment and management of the range of disorders related to combat-exposure and military service, within the context of parallel research in civilians and athletes. Overall, my work that spans VCU and VA are focused on multimodal clinical research to assess, predict and enhance long-term health outcomes for civilians and Veterans with a range of exposures and risk factors, including cardiovascular, neurologic and mental health, and to identify whole health strategies for optimizing long-term management.
