Scott McDonald, PhD

Dr. Scott McDonald is SCI Neuropsychologist and Director of the VA Mid-Atlantic Mental Illness Research Education Clinical Center’s (MIRECC) Advanced Psychology Fellowship Program at the Central Virginia VA Health Care System. He has an affiliate Associate Professor appointment in Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and an Assistant Professor appointment in the Department of Psychology. He completed a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2006 with an internship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Birmingham VA Medical Center Psychology Training Consortium and a MIRECC Advanced Psychology Fellowship at the Durham VA Medical Center.

 

Dr. McDonald’s research aims to better understand mental health, resilience, and adjustment after acquired physical disability. He was the recipient of a VA RR&D Career Development Award-2 (2012-2017) that aimed to better understand resilience and adjustment in the year following polytraumatic and spinal cord injuries (SCI). Current research explores medical and psychosocial determinants of important health and mental health outcomes and the development of interventions to improve the well-being of Veterans living with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and SCI.
